St John’s Graveyard, Church of Ireland

St John’s Church of Ireland stands on the site of an earlier church, which dated from the 1200s. The walls around the graveyard were built in 1693 and present church was built in 1852. The church fell into disuse in the early 1970s and was handed over to the Limerick Corporation in 1975.

Below are transcriptions from the graveyard, some of the headstones have become severely weather-worn and were unreadable. Where possible further information of those buried in the graveyard has been added, such as obituaries from the Limerick City Library Local Studies.

1. The Family Burial place of William Lane Joynt (1825) who died 3^rd January 1895. Janet Russell Joynt his wife died 25^th July 1875. Richard Lane Joynt, M.D. Easter Day 1928. With Christ to Rise. (William Lane-Joynt – died at 43 Merrion Square, Dublin aged 70, he was a former mayor of Limerick.)
2. Erected by Thomas Gabbett in memory of his much beloved wife Mary Gabbett alias Ferguson who departed life 22^nd July 1827. Also here lieth the body of Thomas Gabbett he departed life 7^th July 18.. His son in law Patrick Roche died 4^th October 1855 aged 52. Also his granddaughter
3.  Sacred to the memory of Captain Richard Hannington of the schooner alarm who died March 22 1842 aged 63 years. Also of his grandson Richard T.R. Hannington who died February 19 1876 aged 28 years.

12. To the memory of Eliza Donnelly who departed this life 6^th June 1867 aged 67 years. This stone is erected by her children. Eliza Nestor died 31^st Jan 1874 aged 27 years. (Eliza Donnelly – Was living at 31 George Street at the time of her death, she out lived her daughter and granddaughter by a few days)

Michael died 11^th May 1848 aged 1 year. Mary died 9^th of January 1857 aged 7 years. Charles died 20^th of November 1858 aged 1 year. Ursula died 26^th of May 1867 aged 15 years. (Anne Eliza McCarthy – She was living at Roches Street at the time of her death. Mary McCarthy – In Roches Street. Charles McCarthy – In Roches Street. 19. The grave of John Fitzgerald late of this city solicitor who departed life of the 11^th day of November 1834 aged 58 years. Also Anna Maria his wife who died 21^st day of December 1854 aged 76. (Anna Maria Fitzgerald - of Rathkeale)
20. To this tomb have been removed from the vault of William Russell in this burial ground the remains of Anna daughter of Hughes Russell Esq. She died on the 2^nd of March 1830. Also the remains of his son Sidney Neptune who died on the 23^rd of May 1838 in the 19^th year of his age.
21. To the memory of Jane relict of the late Hughes Russell esq. daughter of Capt Neptune Blood of Applevale County Clare. She died on the 21^st of June, 1872 aged 83 years. (Jane Russell – She died at South View, Kilkee, Co. Clare)
22. Hampden Wm Russell’s  Vault. Here are interred the remains of his father Hughes Russell Esq. He died on the 15^th of April 1858 aged 80 years. (Hughes Russell – Merton Cottage, Kilkee. Former Treasurer of the Fever and Lock hospitals in Limerick City)
23. Here rest the remains of Sarah the beloved wife of Hampden William Russell Esq. Daughter of Captain Henry Silver Brown. She departed this life on the 3^rd of September 1868. In the 50^th year of her age. (Sarah Russell – of 72 George Street)

47. Philip Russell’s Vault. Here are interred his rewards. He was born on the 6^th of March 1750 and died on 24^th of June 1832. In this tomb also rest the remains of his wife Susan daughter of Lt. Col. Keane and his sons Francis Philip Henry Ivers and Whitecat Keane Russell, also his son-in-law James Buo? Ewart, Capt 93rd Highland Reg. of Foot, and of his wife Elizabeth Ewart.

Clare 8^th April 1911 in the 30^th years of his age and the seventh year his ministry. Also of his sisters Anna Maria Goggin who died 6 september 1923 and  Elizabeth Brew Hance who died 6^th February 1935.
58. Here lieth the remains of William Glover of the city of Limerick who died 20^th May 1867. Also of Eliza Goggin his sister in law who died 20 September 1860 with other members of her family. Also of Thomas Goggin Glover who died at Dublin on the 30^th Oct 1873 whose sorrowing widow has erected this stone in affectionate remembrance.
59. To the memory of John Unthank Esq. of Thomas Street in this city who departed this life on the 19^th February 1849 aged 57 years. This monument is erected as a small testimony of the respect and affection of his sorrowing wife and children.

(William James Young – was resident at North Strand when he died, his wife’s middle name was Anna according to the newspaper listing, she was daughter of Robert Roland Drought, and they were resident at 4 New Street when she died.)

Wicklow in April 1885.)

Also buried in this graveyard in an unlocated grave is Joseph Bradshaw, Born 1835 Dromkeen, Limerick. Died 29 August 1893. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his efforts in Sebastopol, Crimea, in 22 April 1855. His medal now resides at Royal Green Jackets Museum, Winchester.
