The following are all the Roman Catholic Clancy’s recorded as buried in St. Mary’s Church of Ireland Cathedral Graveyard. There were many others who were buried in this grave under the cover of darkness as there would have been an enormous stigma attached to a a Catholic burial in a Church of Ireland graveyard.
All those buried in this grave bear the Clancy name, which means that if a married into the family she could lay claim to the grave, while if a daughter married out of the family she would lose her claim.
There is family story of two half brothers who both had rights to be buried in the grave, one of whom was Michael Clancy (died 1938). His brother Patrick bought a plot in Mount Saint Laurence Cemetery as he “did not want to spend eternity lying next to that man”.
Many of the Clancy men were part of the Abbey Fishermen Guild who lived in the Abbey area of the city.
