This exceptionally rare photograph from around 1901 captures a pivotal moment as a photographer skilfully prepares to take a shot.
While examining my collection of Limerick photographs, I noticed a familiar scene of the military crossing Mathew Bridge. It suddenly struck me that this scene was also captured in the Ludlow Collection’s “God Save The King” series. Standing atop the bridge wall was John Riddell (circled) capturing close-up images of the parade as it passed down Bridge Street.

This discovery is truly remarkable. Photographs of Limerick from this period are rare, but to have two images capturing the same scene, with one featuring a photographer at work, is exceptionally uncommon. This find not only enriches our understanding of Limerick’s history but also highlights the invaluable role photographers played in preserving these moments.
